Bossuet, Jacques-Bénigne
► (1627-1704) Escritor y orador francés, llamado el Águila de Meaux. Obispo de Condom y de Meaux. Preceptor del delfín, de 1670 a 1679 se dedicó íntegramente a sus tareas docentes, redactando Discurso sobre la historia universal (1681). Sostuvo la política religiosa de Luis XIV. Participó activamente en la lucha contra los protestantes con diversas publicaciones como Historia de las variaciones de las iglesias protestantes (1688). Su fama literaria se debe a sus Sermones, una de las obras maestras de la elocuencia francesa.

Obispo francés. Ordenado sacerdote en 1652, ganó celebridad como gran orador y fue un predicador de gran popularidad. En 1681 se convirtió en obispo de Meaux. Fue el más elocuente e influyente defensor de los derechos de la Iglesia francesa frente a la autoridad papal durante el s. XVII. En la actualidad, se lo recuerda principalmente por sus obras literarias, entre ellas panegíricos fúnebres.
